Description:
TotalEnergies, a company active in the energy sector, is developing a network of high-power charging (HPC) stations in Germany, designed to offer electric vehicle drivers with a complete and comfortable charging experience.
These Electric Vehicles (EV) Hubs, located at 134 sites across eastern, central and western Germany, combine rapid charging with public washrooms and dining facilities, turning every into a moment of comfort and convenience.
This initiative is part of the broader “Deutschlandnetz” project, launched by the German government to create a nationwide network of HPC charging points powered entirely by renewable energy. The plan includes the installation of more than 8,000 charging stations across 1,000 sites throughout the country, with the goal of ensuring consistent coverage across the German territory.
In this framework, SANO2 cooperates with TotalEnergies for the supply and installation of public washrooms in EV Hubs.
The installation of a SANO2 self-cleaning public washroom in Zwickau marks an important milestone in this wide project: it is a fully automatic washroom for users with disabilities, designed and built in accordance with German regulation DIN 18040-2, which defines standards ensuring accessibility, safety, and independence. The selected model, DIVO H, features S5 self-cleaning technology, representing the most advanced evolution of SANO2’s products combining comfort, hygiene and functionality in one solution.
The facilities operate with total reliability thanks to the integration of professional PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) for automation. These industrial-grade devices were chosen by SANO2 for their precision and durability. Unlike custom-made electronic boards, PLCs provide constant monitoring while withstanding humidity, vibration, and impact. This ensure stable temperature regulation and certified control of all functions ‒ delivering safety and performance comparable to the most advanced automation systems.
Given Zwickau weather conditions, characterized by cold winters, SANO2 implemented the Riscaldamento Pro heating system ‒ an advanced solution that ensures comfort even with temperatures falling between -5°C and -10°C. Heated floors and thresholds prevents doors from freezing, while a 1,000-watt ceramic fan heater maintain a stable temperature in technical rooms. In addition, an automatic water-drain system prevents pipes from freezing, ensuring uninterrupted service in all weather conditions.
One of the most distinctive features of this installation is its green roof ‒ a design choice combining environmental and aesthetic value. The basin-style roof designed supports a layer of greenery, transforming the structure into a small ecosystem that harmonizes with its surroundings. In an area mainly dedicated to electric mobility ‒ dominated by asphalt and technological infrastructures ‒ the green roof adds a natural element that softens visual impact and enhances integration. Beyond its visual appeal, the vegetation also has a technical function: it improves thermal insulation, reduces heat loss and helps absorb fine dust particles, thereby lowering the ecological footprint of the installation.
As with all automatic washrooms, the core of functionality in Zwickau’s facility is its self-cleaning system, which ensures full sanitization of the toilet bowl, washbasin, and floor after each use. Additionally, during night-time, the SANO SAFE® device performs an ozone-based disinfection. An approach SANO2 has adopted as a sustainable alternative to UV-based sanitization, which – to be truly effective – needs a direct exposure (barely present in public toilets’ structures). Ozone, instead, is a natural gas with strong oxidizing powers. It penetrates every corner and guarantees a complete disinfection of air and all surfaces. It destroys bacteria, viruses, moulds and foul odours with no chemical residues. It is a technology combining effectiveness and sustainability, contributing to maintain consistent hygienic standards even in highly-frequented contexts.
With this first public washroom installed in Zwickau, SANO2 and TotalEnergies are helping redefine the concept of a charging area ‒ not just as a place of transit, but as a welcoming, safe, and accessible space for everyone.
