Description:
In the heart of Islington, one of the London boroughs among the most active in urban regeneration and social inclusivity, two new SANO2.Ltd. self-cleaning public washrooms are operational.
Located on City Road and Highbury Fields, they represent the first implementations of a broader plan promoted by Islington Council as a part of its 2025-2027 public strategy, aimed at improving accessibility and quality of public washrooms in the community, paying particular attention to disabled people.
The new units are the result of a synergy between Hi-Tec Washroom Solutions Ltd and SANO2, leader in the production of prefabricated, self-cleaning public washrooms, together in the Anglo-Italian joint venture SANO2.Ltd., a collaboration which unites design and technologic innovation, construction reliability and attention to details.
For this first urban requalification intervention, Islington chose S5 DIVO H UK model, in its outdoor configuration, characterized by the sophisticated New York design. These are state-of-the-art urban décor elements, designed to harmoniously integrate into the urban context while ensuring the highest safety, hygiene and accessibility levels.
The steel monobloc prefabricated structures, designed for an outdoor intensive usage, ensure durability even under extreme weather conditions, minimizing the need for maintenance. The interior space, wide and functional (2,20 x 1,68 m, x 2,30 m),complies with the Disability discrimination Act (DDA) (similar to Canadian Human Rights Act) criteria and allows an easy wheelchair access . SANO2.Ltd public washrooms go beyond their sanitary units function: they are smart and inclusive spaces, designed to ensure a safe, comfortable and dignified experience at every use for all citizens.
Each night, the patented SANOSAFE® system activates the automatic ozone (O3) sanitation, a green, highly effective process which grants thorough cleaning with no use of chemical products. The interior controls are completely no-touch, in order to reduce hygienic risks, while the automatic door opening, inclusive Braille signage and radar key setup make the toilet accessible for all.
A voice prompts system guides users step by step, providing support even for those with visual or motor impairments; there is a button for immediate door opening by Fire-fighters, in case of emergency.
Both units are connected to SANO2CONNECT® UBIQUITY system, a 4G digital remote control platform which allows for constant desktop or smart phone monitoring: functionality, usage frequency, safety alarms and maintenance interventions are continuously controlled. A smart solution, optimizing management expense while reducing transfers environmental impact.
Comfort and sustainability coexist in every detail: low-consumption LED lighting, internal heating with heated threshold, heat convectors and antifreeze systems ensure optimal use even during winter.
Inside the facilities, each element is designed to last in time and facilitate maintenance: an instant electric water heater, vandal-proof showerhead, suspended stainless steel toilet bowl and durable changing mat make the washrooms practical, robust and comfortable.
A particular attention has been dedicated to female wellbeing, with a sanitary napkins container equipped with a double basket for separate collection.
Finally, access payment methods are simple and accessible for all users: change, contactless cards, mobile app and radar key are all supported. A new generation civic service which redefines the concept of public washroom.
With this installation, Islington is confirmed as a virtuous example of an administration sensitive to inclusive and future oriented urban design. SANO2.Ltd is working towards this change by offering reliable and safe solutions, complying with British regulations: together with local governments, it raises the standards of public service and shared spaces. Washrooms are no longer marginal elements of the urban fabric, but strategic components for a more liveable, welcoming and technologically evolved city.
