Description:
The value of a public washroom in a lakeside area
In a place people choose every day for taking a walk, running, cycling or simply enjoying the outdoors and spending time with family, the presence of a public washroom significantly enhances the overall experience. It makes it easier to stay comfortably outside the home, for longer periods, with greater ease and freedom. This is the value of the installation created by SANO2PAQUET for the Municipality of Dijon along the “Alice Milliat” Promenade ‒ on Lake Kir: one of the city’s most popular green areas for leisure, sports, and outdoor living. For SANO2 SOLUTIONS, this project represents an international case study that showcases a tailored approach to public washrooms design: understanding people’s needs starting in different contexts and delivering solutions capable that enhance the space in which they are installed.
Lake Kir in Dijon: nature enjoyed every day, in every season
A large, artificial lake, fed by the Ouche river and completed in 1964, Lake Kir has long been a landmark of outdoor life in Dijon. Around the lake runs a flat, well-maintained 3.6 km loop, frequented by walkers, runners, cyclists, skaters, and families with children. During the warmer months, the lakeside comes alive with “Dijon Plage”, offering supervised swimming, sandy beaches and recreational activities. The lake sees varying levels of use throughout the seasons, yet it is never empty. This constant activity makes the presence of public washroom facilities essential. When these are clean, reliable and well integrated into their surroundings, they allow people to stay longer, move about with ease and fully enjoy the space.
The regenerated Promenade has made the lakeside more accessible and better equipped
In recent years, Lake Kir has undergone a redevelopment process that has further integrated it into the public life of Dijon. The Promenade, dedicated to the athlete Alice Milliat ‒ one of the key figures in the history of women’s sport ‒ represents the central element of this transformation: a continuous route around the lake designed for pedestrians, runners and cyclists, capable of better organising flows while connecting sports, relaxation, nature and events. In places like this, public washrooms do not simply complete the offering: they make the area genuinely liveable and accessible for all. This vision is fully shared by SANO2 SOLUTIONS, which sees public washrooms as a concrete component of the quality of life in both urban and natural environment.
A cutting-edge facility for a more welcoming lakeside
SANO2PAQUET installed a multi-unit, BRAVO HN module with S3 self-cleaning technology, consisting of one accessible washroom for people with disabilities and one standard unit. This configuration effectively responds to the diversity of visitors, providing an inclusive service adapted to varying levels of use throughout the day. For those who choose Lake Kir for a walk, a bike ride, a run, or a day outdoors, access to an automated public washroom means being able to enjoy the space with continuity, safety, hygiene and a level of comfort consistent with the overall quality of the environment. The exterior cladding further contributes to this balance: the unit is finished in closed-joint larch treated with natural stain, allowing it to blend more harmoniously into the lakeside landscape and the natural character of the area. For SANO2PAQUET, as well as for SANO2 SOLUTIONS, this is a key feature: fully integrating each solutions into its context, while respecting its aesthetics and design.
A well-equipped service for pedestrians and cyclists
Attention to people is also reflected in the exterior features, designed for those who actively experience the space. A timed drinking water tap provides a practical support for refilling bottles along the way. In front of the facility, a public bike pump station is also available, useful for those using the area for sports, leisure, or transit. These simple services help extending visitors’ stay, enhance the outdoor experience, and offer a more complete and comfortable use of the space. They also reflect the brand’s vision: observing how people use a place and designing functional solutions around those real needs, down to the smallest detail.
A public washroom designed to ensure continuity, hygiene and reliability
This case study highlights the outcome achieved by this solution: a facility that is always ready to use, maintaining consistent hygiene levels throughout the day and supporting the continuous use of the surrounding environment.
In such a highly frequented green space, this means offering users a washroom they can rely on, consistent over time and aligned with the quality expected from a redeveloped public area. For SANO2 SOLUTIONS, this case confirms a key principle: technology always serves user experience and service continuity.
Automatic toilets really impact the quality of public life
The Lake Kir installation clearly demonstrates that when placed in the right location and designed around the real needs of users, a public washroom enhances spatial quality, encourages longer stays, supports activities, and promotes autonomy in outdoor environments.
For SANO2PAQUET and SANO2 SOLUTIONS improving a space means first and foremost improving the experience of those who use it.
