Description:
In the Municipality of Schœlcher, overlooking the Caribbean Sea and in the French overseas department of Martinique, a new installation designed by SANO2PAQUET has been completed: a self-cleaning public washroom – model DIVO H ‒ equipped with S5 technology, custom-designed to meet the specific needs of the area and the local community.
This facility offers both residents and tourists a place to stop with complete peace of mind, ensuring hygiene, inclusiveness and comfort even in a challenging climate.
This new self-cleaning washroom is part of an ongoing initiative by the Municipality, which had previously selected SANO2PAQUET for another installation, reaffirming its commitment to investing in durable solutions, capable of enhancing public spaces, even in complex environments such as the Caribbeans.
The structure is a vibrated reinforced concrete monoblock and it has been fully customised – both aesthetically and functionally. The facility consists of a spacious washroom area and features two public showers at the rear. These are equipped with timed push-buttons and programmable solenoid valves, allowing precise regulation of operating hours, optimized water consumption and sustainable management of the entire facility. For users, this means a service that is consistently available during scheduled hours, well-organised, and carefully managed.
To ensure a truly inclusive experience, a durable plastic seat designed for people with reduced mobility has been installed beneath one of the showers.
The proximity to the sea has led to several design choices. For the exterior cladding, porcelain stoneware tiles ‒ Marazzi Lume Oceano 6×24, in the Ocean Lux shade ‒ were selected. This bright finish, inspired by the Caribbean colours is designed, above all to withstand time, humidity, salt exposure and harsh weather conditions.
In keeping with the surrounding maritime environment, all metal components have been built with AISI 316L stainless steel, to ensure durability and consistent performance over time.
The installation also reflects the identity and heritage of the Municipality of Schœlcher: a backlit graphic element in the shape of a dove ‒ a symbol of peace and freedom ‒ has been integrated into the façade, as a tribute to the community and its values.
The facility is complemented by the external energy-efficient LED lighting and a stainless steel header box featuring backlight pictograms that indicate the washroom status and illuminate the entrance, improving visibility and safety even at night. This allows users to access the toilet with complete peace of mind, at any time.
Users attention extends throughout the entire experience: operating instructions are available both in Braille and via an audio guidance system with dedicated messages for visually impaired people. Access to the washroom can be configured according to the Municipality’s requirements, ranging from a multi-coin selector for free access, to contactless payment methods and mobile apps solutions. This flexibility facilitates use for both tourists and residents and makes the facility easily-accessible and ready for immediate use.
S5 self-cleaning technology represents the core of the installation: after each use, the restroom automatically initiates a washing cycle lasting less than one minute, disinfecting and drying the toilet bowl, surrounding walls, the floor and sink. The automated cleaning systems ensure a consistently sanitised environment for users, reducing the discomfort typically associated to public washrooms.
The experience is further enhanced by touch-less controls: by eliminating contact with the surfaces, they promote safer use, in accordance with a prevention-oriented, “COVID FREE” approach.
To further enhance overall hygiene inside the facility, including air quality, the washroom is equipped with the SANOSAFE® system for night ozone-based sanitization. This technology disinfects air and surfaces in an environmentally-friendly manner, with no chemical substances use, while also contributing to effective odour control. In addition, the facility features a vandal-resistant 8400 BTU air-conditioning system, designed to maintain an appropriate indoor temperature and a high level of comfort for users, even in the tropical climate of Martinique.
This self-cleaning SANO2PAQUET washroom in Schœlcher shows a precise vision: a public restroom designed to last in a maritime environment, an efficient management, accurately designed and truly accessible. A facility which focuses on people experience and contributes to an improvement of the urban quality, turning a simple public washroom into an essential element for the whole community.
